He is having a nightmare again….
It’s the 3rd one this week.
He keeps telling me not to worry, that it is something that will eventually get better but it hasn’t.
He tells me why they are coming.
Something about men who hurt him when he was my age.
Someone he loved. She died. He was there and it still hurts.
And he died once. He still gets scared about that one.
What he doesn’t realize is that I already know these things. I know when they are coming, when they stop. I know how many he has, how strong they are, how scared he gets by how heavy he breathes. I even know when he is about to wake up.
See, I am not only his; he is mine.
My name is Gunner.
I am a service dog.

One day my watch will end. On that day, I will be called to rest by the great Alpha.
